 New Garden Friends' Nick Elliott goes up for two in Wednesday's FBS Middle School League action at Canterbury.  The Friends' swept two games to take the lead in the standings.

1ST ROUND PLAYOFFS

Tuesday night's first round playoff games turned out to be routine as all the top seeds advanced to Wednesdays Semifinals.   New Garden Friends started the day with a 58-11 victory over OLG.  Every memeber of NGF scored a bucket and Conor O'brien and Jake Ray had some terrific rebounds and defensive plays.  OlG was led by Tyler Wiedwald with 5. St Pius turned an 11-10 first half lead into a 26-19 victory over Caldwell in a low scoring affair. Pius scored the first 10 points of the second half on route to victroy. Nice contributions from Seth Davis and Clay Parr for St Pius.  Freddy Ortman and AShton Harvery were scorers for Caldwell.   In the nightcap, WCA beat Canterbury school 56-13.   Micah DiFoggio ahad 14 points including 3 three pointers while Chritian Little and Trenton Jackson also got into the scoring column. Jack Britts, Billy Burton, and Josh Keys got buckets for Canterbury.
 
 

 

 

 

 

WEEK 6 UPDATE

 It was moving day Monday in the FBS Middle School Summer League, as four teams battled for seeds 3-6 for the upcoming playoffs. 

The 5-6 game featured league rivals Canterbury and Caldwell, with Caldwell coming away with a 51-36 victory.  Alex Jones led Caldwell with 15, while Addison Newkirk chipped in 10. Canterbury was led by its emerging star Jack Britts, who led all scorers with 20 points.  In the 3-4 matchup, Wesleyan Christain beat a hobbled St Pius team 37-17.  WCA's pressure defense turned out to be the factor with several steals and layups in transition.  Pius' Grady Sherrill suffered an ankle injury in the first half and did not return.  John Gilchrist led a balanced WCA attack with 10 points.

 

 

 

 

 

WEEK 5 UPDATE

Greensboro Day school wrapped up first place and an undefeted season in the 2017 FBS Summer League with a pair of victories Wednesday night. Gds defeated Caldwell Academy 53 to 27, and then beat Canterbury 68 to 42. Riggs Handy had 18 and Connor Ballou nine points in the Caldwell win, while Ashton Harvey had nine and Freddie Ortmann six for Caldwell. GDS received and early scare from Canterbury down as many as 10 in the first half, but rallied with a well balanced offense to defeat the Cougars. Handy had 20 while Jason Hancock added 13. Dawson McAlhany  was on stoppable early and finished with 22 points while Jack Britz added eight points for Canterbury.
 
New Garden Friends School wrapped up second place with a 46 to 33 victory over St Pius. This game was close throughout with NGF pulling away late in the second half. Xavier nearly had 16 points while Keyshawn Watkins added 13. Henry Riek led St Pius with 17 and Blake Bery had 8 including 2-3 pointers. Weslyan Christian Academy had a very balanced scoring attack beating Our Lady of Grace.  Christian Little led WCA with 11 points. OLG had a strong defense of effort from Tyler Weidwald and Matthew Ma.
 
Regular-season play ends Monday night with a pair of games, with the league tournament starting Tuesday.
 

 

 

 

 

WEEK 4 UPDATE

The fourth week of the FBS Middle School league featured tight games,  a first win, and a remaining undefeated team. The opener featured Canterbury and St Pius, with St Pius pulling out a 31-28 victory as Parren Maultsby's 3 pointer fell short enabling Pius to hold on. Canterbury was down as many as 10, but fought back to get a chance for the tie at the end. Greensboro Day School edged out Wesleyan Christian Academy 42 to 33.The game featured many lead changes until Greensboro Day pulled away with a late first half 12-0 run. Wesleyan closed the gap to as close as 3 in the second half,  but strong play from Connor Ballou and Riggs Handy turned out to be the difference. Jefferson McLamb led Wesleyan with 11 points while TR Johnson had 9.  New Garden friends continued their winning ways with a 56 to 27 victory over OLG. Keyshawn Watkins was the sharpshooter for Friends leading them with 20 points, while hitting a couple of three pointers. Nicholas Graves was dynamite for OLG scoring 9. In a balance scoring attack, Caldwell Academy earned its first victory with a 58-20 win over OLG.  Freddy Ortman had 12 points, while Addison Newkirk chipped in 10.
 

 

 

 

 

WEEK 3 UPDATE

 

Week three of the FBS  Summer League featured a couple of exciting games, and then an overtime thriller between Canterbury school and Wesleyan academy. Wesleyan academy fought off a late deficit in regulation and beat Canterbury school 52-45 in overtime. Alex Magee had 15 points for WCA while Dawson McAlhany he was dynamite with 25. In other action, Greensboro Day School beat New Garden Friends 59 to 44. Connor Ballou had 20 points and a couple of three pointers while Riggs Handy had 15. Nick Elliott hit 6 3-pointers for NGF, Xavier Neely and Keyshawn Watkins had 10 points apiece. Also, St Pius beat OLG 48-18. Four players for St Pius scored six points including Henry Riek and Frankie Cetrone.William Sloayn and contributed very nicely for OLG in his first action.
 

 

 

WEEK 2 UPDATE

Wednesday nights action in the Future Basketball Stars Summer League had it all..buzzer beaters, overtimes, and even a power outage.  When the dust settled, New Garden Friends had swept a double header to take the lead in the standings and remained undefeated at 3-0. NGF defeated Wesleyan Christian 48-45 in OT, and barley squeaked by Caldwell Academy 37-35 in their first game. NGF's Nick Elliott hit a 22-foot 3 pointer with seconds remaining for the winning margin in the Wesleyan game.  WCA had overcome a 10 point defecit with great play from Alex McGee and TR Johnson.

In the Caldwell clash, Elliott's 3 point play folled by a Zaiver Neely basket proved to be the winning margin. Caldwell's Drew Bartlett was sensational running the point with very nice drives to the rim. The game was delayed nearly 30 minutes as the power went out in the Northern Greensboro area. Luckily, it was restored in time fo finish.

In other action, Greensboro DAy remained undfeated beating St Pius 62-35. Riggs Handy scored 20 in the first half for GDS, Blak Berry and Grady Sherril made nice contributions for SPX .In the first game. Canterbury returned a full squad to beat OLG 41-16, very nice contributions by Jack Britt as he was a beast on the boards. Patrick and Nicholas Graves were "Kyrie Irving like" with their attack of the rim for OLG.

 

 

 

 

WEEK 1 SCORES

New Garden Friends 55, Canterbury 14: The 2017 FBS Summer League kicked off with a solid showing by NGF as they knocked off a scrappy Canterbury team.  Nick Elliott led the way with pinpoint passes while controlling the tempo for NGF.  Canterbury's Billy Burton was all over the floor on every loose ball! Great energy!

 

GDS 62, OLG 7:GDS high powered offense was in full effect with many members scoring and contribituing.  Nice break out perfomance as well by Seth Green! OLG's Patrick Graves had beautiful takes to the rim and Matthew Ma controlled the boards.

St Pius 43, Caldwell 40:In the day's most exciting game, Grady Sherrill hit a 3 point shot as time expired to lift St Pius over a young but talented Caldwell team. Caldwell's Addison Newkirk had tied the game at 40 with a free throw before Grady took the ball in the half court with one dribble and let it fly.

WCA 62, Caldwell 43:New FBS addition Wesleyan Christain had a solid all around effort beating Caldwell in the nightcap.  Caldwell hung around, down 8 at the half and as colse as 41-38 in the 2nd half, but WCA scored transtion buckets down the stretch to pull away.

WCA's Donovan Stricklin did a fine job distributing at point while scoring off his dribble drives.  GReat effort by Caldwell's Ashton Harvey running the floor and moving without the basketball.
